CHICAGO (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Kenneth Walker III on injured reserve prior to their game against the Chicago Bears on Thursday because of an ankle injury. Walker hurt his ankle in last week's loss to Minnesota and left that game after sitting out the previous two because of a calf problem. He also missed two weeks in September with an oblique issue. Walker has run for 573 yards and seven touchdowns on 153 carries. A second-round draft pick by Seattle in 2022, he has 2,528 yards rushing and 24 TDs in his career. Walker could, in theory, return if the Seahawks win two playoff games, though their postseason hopes were slim entering the game against Chicago. Seattle (8-7) trailed the NFC West-leading Los Angeles Rams (9-6) by one game with two to play. The Seahawks' best path to the postseason was to win the final two regular-season games and have Los Angeles lose to Arizona on Saturday. Seattle visits the Rams to close the regular season. With Walker out, Seattle signed rookie running back George Holani off the practice squad. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLHealth and safety tips for a stress-free holiday season

Chinese spy claims add to Prince Andrew's woesAfter almost a decade of entertaining her neighbourhood with a massive lights display, Golden Square's bringer of cheer Janine Dole is calling time on her annual tradition. or signup to continue reading Every year, Janine puts up an interactive display in her front yard and hands out treats to eager children. "It just makes my day to see all the children happy," she said. "I've got nine grandbabies, so I love doing it for them and it just makes me really happy." Two years ago, she raised money for cancer research in honour of her parents, who both died of the disease. As she was getting older, and given the time and money it took to put up a display, Ms Dole said she came to the decision to pull the plug on having a large display. "I'm getting older and I work cleaning every day, five days a week, and I'm just tired," she said. "I get home and we stay out here till about 10.30pm." Although she planned to sell or give away most of her decorations, there was a possibility Ms Dole's daughter Brianna McDonald would pick up the tradition. "She said maybe last year was the last year, and then we had our final baby and she was like 'oh, okay, one more year'," she said. The mum-of-four said was always a special time in Bendigo, with excitement building until December 25. Christmas lights provided a fun - and free - activity for families. "Everything's so expensive, even going and getting Christmas photos can be such a difficult time for families," Ms McDonald said. "It's the end of the year for kids; we've got uniforms and book lists and everything for next year; we've got birthdays, we've got Christmas, we've got everything. "It's just so nice to be able to bring some kind of festive spirit." Neighbour Mary Cuskelly said she'd be sad to see Ms Dole end her tradition. "We live in a court and every year on Christmas Eve the neighbours from every house, and others from the adjoining streets, come together with their fold-up chairs and tables to share food and drinks and to enjoy the spectacle of the lights and to feel the love and friendship of each other at such a wonderful and special time," she said. If this would be her last year, Janine was determined to make it memorable. She has organised a special night featuring an appearance from Mrs Claus, with free photos and gifts, on December 21 from 6.30pm at her house on Taplan Court, Golden Square you won't miss it. ‘History will be kinder to me’ – remembering former PM Manmohan Singh through his 5 powerful statementsIndia mourns the loss of visionary leader Manmohan Singh, tributes pour inMAPUTO, Mozambique. (AP) — At least 6,000 inmates escaped from a high-security prison in Mozambique’s capital on Christmas Day after a rebellion, the country's police chief said, as widespread post-election riots and violence are roiling the country. Police chief Bernardino Rafael said 33 prisoners died and 15 others were injured during a confrontation with the security forces. The prisoners fled during violent protests that have seen police cars, stations and infrastructure destroyed after the country’s Constitutional Council confirmed the ruling Frelimo party as the winner of the Oct. 9 elections. The escape from the Maputo Central Prison, located 14 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of the capital, started around midday on Wednesday after “agitation” by a “group of subversive protesters” nearby, Rafael said. Some of the prisoners at the facility snatched weapons from the guards and started freeing other detainees. “A curious fact is that in that prison we had 29 convicted terrorists, who they released. We are worried, as a country, as Mozambicans, as members of the defense and security forces,” said Rafael. “They (protesters) were making noise, demanding that they be able to remove the prisoners who are there serving their sentences”, said Rafael, adding that the protests led to the collapse of a wall, allowing the prisoners to flee. He called on the escaped prisoners to surrender to authorities and for the population to be informed about the fugitives. Videos circulating on social media show the moment inmates left the prison, while other recordings reveal captures made by military personnel and prison guards. Many prisoners tried to hide in homes, but some were unsuccessful and ended up being detained again. In one video, a prisoner still with handcuffs on his right wrist says he was held n the disciplinary section of the prison and was released by other inmates.
Ex-OpenAI engineer who raised legal concerns about the technology he helped build has diedBy ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Republican senators pushed back on Sunday against criticism from Democrats that , Donald Trump’s pick to lead , is “compromised” by and , as a congresswoman, with Syria’s president, a close ally of the Kremlin and Iran. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Illinois Democrat and veteran of combat missions in Iraq, said she had concerns about Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s choice to be . “I think she’s compromised,” Duckworth said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” citing Gabbard’s 2017 trip to Syria, where she held talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Gabbard was a Democratic House member from Hawaii at the time. “The U.S. intelligence community has identified her as having troubling relationships with America’s foes. And so my worry is that she couldn’t pass a background check,” Duckworth said. Gabbard, who said last month she is joining the Republican Party, has served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades. She was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait and, according to the Hawaii National Guard, a Combat Medical Badge in 2005 for “participation in combat operations under enemy hostile fire in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III.” Duckworth’s comments drew immediate backlash from Republicans. “For her to say ridiculous and outright dangerous words like that is wrong,” Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma, said on CNN, challenging Duckworth to retract her words. “That’s the most dangerous thing she could say — is that a United States lieutenant colonel in the United States Army is compromised and is an asset of Russia.” In recent days, other Democrats have accused Gabbard without evidence of being a “Russian asset.” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, has claimed, without offering details, that Gabbard is in Russian President Vladimir “Putin’s pocket.” Mullin and others say the criticism from Democrats is rooted in the fact that Gabbard left their party and has become a Trump ally. Democrats say they worry that Gabbard’s selection as national intelligence chief endangers ties with allies and gives Russia a win. Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat just elected to the Senate, said he would not describe Gabbard as a Russian asset, but said she had “very questionable judgment.” “The problem is if our foreign allies don’t trust the head of our intelligence agencies, they’ll stop sharing information with us,” Schiff said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Gabbard in 2022 endorsed one of Russia’s justifications for : the existence of working on some of the world’s nastiest pathogens. The labs are part of an international effort to control outbreaks and stop bioweapons, but Moscow claimed Ukraine was using them to create deadly bioweapons. Gabbard said she just voiced concerns about protecting the labs. Gabbard also has suggested that Russia had legitimate security concerns in deciding to invade Ukraine, given its desire to join NATO. Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri said he thought it was “totally ridiculous” that Gabbard was being cast as a Russian asset for having different political views. “It’s insulting. It’s a slur, quite frankly. There’s no evidence that she’s a asset of another country,” he said on NBC. Sen. James Lankford, another Oklahoma Republican, acknowledged having “lots of questions” for Gabbard as the Senate considers her nomination to lead the intelligence services. Lankford said on NBC that he wants to ask Gabbard about her meeting with Assad and some of her past comments about Russia. “We want to know what the purpose was and what the direction for that was. As a member of Congress, we want to get a chance to talk about past comments that she’s made and get them into full context,” Lankford said.

Archer Aviation Stock: Buy, Sell, or Hold?Sam Altman joins Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos in donating $1 million to Trump's inaugural fundJohor government will streamline all benefits and incentives provided to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the state through the Entrepreneurs Data Centre (Padu) system starting next year. State youth, sports, entrepreneur development and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said the decision followed investigations by Perbadanan Usahawan Johor Sdn Bhd (PUJB), which revealed instances of some SMEs receiving one-off benefits multiple times. “There have been reports of owners receiving support up to three times from different federal and state government agencies. “The additional aid could have been used to help other SMEs in need. “Although these cases are rare, we need a strict, fair approach to ensure no single SME receives multiple aid from various agencies. “This way, we can assist more small businesses in need,” he told StarMetro. Mohd Hairi added that 63,000 businesses were currently registered under Padu, with 57,000 of them being SMEs. PUJB will collaborate with Johor State Entrepreneur Development Council to better manage and identify the types of aid and businesses to support in the future, he said. Currently, there are 43 state and federal agencies under the entrepreneur development council, aside from private sector participation. In addition to streamlining state aid for SMEs, PUJB through Padu will also organise events and programmes more effectively to avoid overlap, according to Mohd Hairi. “We recently received complaints about six food festivals and events being held simultaneously in various parts of Johor Baru. “This spreads the target market too thin, leaving some businesses unable to make a profit. “With PUJB overseeing future programmes, we aim to ensure better organisation and more strategic scheduling so SMEs can benefit fully,” he said. When asked whether the state planned to capitalise on Malaysia’s role as Asean chair next year, Mohd Hairi confirmed that the entrepreneur development council was exploring opportunities. “This will be an excellent chance for local businesses to gain international exposure.”
Hyderabad Jana Sena Party president and Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan, whose aggressive campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the just concluded Maharashtra assembly elections resulted in a resounding victory in several constituencies, is turning out to be a virtual brand ambassador for the BJP, said analysts. As the election results in Maharashtra on Saturday indicated, the BJP won in almost all the constituencies, including Ballarpur, Deglur, Pune, Solapur, Latur and Nanded, where Pawan Kalyan campaigned last week. “He had drawn huge crowds wherever he campaigned. Such was the response to his rabble-rousing speeches from the people that there were requests from the BJP candidates in other adjacent constituencies for his campaign,” said a Jana Sena Party leader on condition of anonymity. The way Pawan Kalyan propagated the concepts of Sanatan Dharma, nationalism combined with regionalism and spirit of Shivaji Maharaj, supported abrogation of Article 370 and raised slogans such as “Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji,” projected him as a true symbol of the right-wing ideology. Political analyst Ramu Suravajjula said that the election results in Maharashtra positioned Pawan Kalyan as a prominent advocate for implementing the BJP’s ideological vision. “The BJP, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, used Pawan Kalyan’s latest avatar as an unapologetic Sanatani to consolidate the Hindu vote bank in Maharashtra. He lived up to the expectations of Modi and Sangh,” he said. He added that the resounding victory of NDA candidates for whom the Jana Sena Party chief campaigned hard increased his bond with Modi and the right-wing brigade. “Pawan Kalyan may make use of the latest camaraderie and positive image at national level for the benefit of Andhra Pradesh and also for his own political future,” he said. In fact, Pawan Kalyan has been a long-time ally of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh and the party declared him as their chief ministerial candidate before it joined the Telugu Desam Party-led by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu to contest the May 2024 assembly elections together and come to power in the state. However, before or during the Andhra elections, Pawan Kalyan had never adopted the right-wing ideology so strongly as he started doing after the assembly elections. He began sporting saffron clothes now and then, talking about protection of Sanatan Dharma aggressively and condemning the sacrilege of Hindu temples in Bangladesh and Pakistan. After the controversial episode of adulteration of ghee used for making of Tirupati laddu, Pawan Kalyan took up deeksha (penance) and called for the establishment of Sanatan Dharma Parirakshana Board to liberate the temple from politicians. On November 2, Pawan Kalyan announced the formation of a new party wing, named Narasimha Varahi Brigade, dedicated to the protection of Sanatana Dharma in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Suravajjula said the BJP obviously sees Pawan Kalyan as a critical ally for amplifying its agenda in Andhra Pradesh, especially in a future scenario involving simultaneous national and state elections. “Though Naidu is also a strong alliance partner of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh, he is seemingly reluctant to push the BJP’s ideological agenda. So, the BJP wants to make use of Pawan Kalyan to carry its message to the grassroots,” he said. However, there are limitations for the BJP in promoting Pawan Kalyan ahead of Naidu in Andhra Pradesh. “First, it is Pawan Kalyan alone who is speaking the language of the right-wing brigade and not other leaders of his party. So far, none of his colleagues in Jana Sena has made any statement in support of his Hindutva ideology,” Suravajjula added. Secondly, Jana Sena Party comprises leaders who defected from other political parties, including the Congress, TDP and YSR Congress party and so, they are from different ideological backgrounds who joined the Jana Sena Party for their political needs. They would not like to carry Pawan Kalyan’s saffron agenda, experts said. Thirdly, Hindutva-based politics has never worked out in Andhra Pradesh, which is more caste oriented. Apart from his filmy image, Pawan Kalyan has the huge support base of Kapu community, which has more than 15% vote bank in the state. There is no guarantee that his new brand image of Sanatani will get traction from the Kapu community in the next elections, analysts added. “However, the clout Pawan Kalyan has created as a Sanatani helps him as a highly reliable friend among the NDA partners. Maharashtra results brought name and fame to him at a national level. It will be interesting to see whether this new image will fetch him any electoral gains in Andhra Pradesh,” Suravajjula added.

5 Facts About Seattle-Tacoma's High-Rise Pedestrian Bridge
The victory in Jharkhand is an encouraging triumph not just for the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) but also the INDIA bloc parties led by the Congress, which are reeling after a massive loss in the bigger State of Maharashtra. Fashioned by the efforts of the JMM, which remains the premier party of choice for the State’s tribal electorate, the victory was also made possible by the coalition partners, the Congress, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the CPI(ML)-Liberation pitching in with good performances. The cumulative adding up of the bases of these respective parties helped the JMM-led alliance earn the confidence of voters beyond seats reserved for the Scheduled Tribes, as the coalition defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party in seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and non-reserved ones as well. Clearly, the arrest and subsequent release on bail of Chief Minister Hemant Soren played a role in the consolidation of support for the ruling party as the electorate did not buy into the allegations of corruption and the BJP’s narrative about the government. Mr. Soren belied expectations of the BJP building on its success in the 2024 general election where its alliance won nine of the 14 constituencies in the State. The BJP had also stitched a coalition with the All Jharkhand Students Union Party (AJSUP) — which eluded it in the 2019 Assembly election — and managed to rope in former Chief Minister Champai Soren through a defection from his parent JMM. These efforts to negate the JMM’s sway over tribal voters came a cropper as Mr. Champai Soren’s influence was limited to his constituency and the AJSUP won only one of the 10 seats it contested. More importantly, the JMM and the INDIA bloc were successful in negating the shrill campaign led by the BJP on the manufactured issue of “infiltration of Bangladeshi immigrants” into the Santhal Pargana region of northeast Jharkhand. This was a thinly veiled attempt at mobilising tribals using the agenda of Hindutva, which includes the pernicious “othering” of Muslims, and to drive a wedge between them and religious minorities. Santhal Pargana decisively voted for the JMM and its allies — 52% of the electorate favoured the ruling coalition, the highest among all regions in the State. Mr. Soren and the JMM’s ploy to negate this rhetoric as being divisive and manufactured and, instead, focusing on tribal unity, worked well. The Jharkhand victory also marks a rare triumph for a non-BJP alliance or a party in North India while being an incumbent in power. Yet, the JMM’s challenges in governing one of India’s poorest States in terms of per capita income, despite being a mineral rich one, will remain. The JMM government sought to focus on welfare to retain its support but it must now focus on job creation and utilising its mineral wealth efficiently.
